10 worst dining trends of the last decade
Agree with most of these.
I’d add the following, as trends that were taken wayyyy too far this decade.
1. Tuna tartar appearing on just about every menu. Get some original ideas, people. Tuna isn’t the only fish/meat you can serve raw, formed in a ring, with olive oil basted crostinis.
2. Purees of everything: I’m getting over the puree smears across the plate. Parsnips, cauliflower, potato, it goes on and on — perhaps it’s time for a new twist?
3. Bacon. Oh my goodness, I can’t believe I’m saying this, but bacon has become a little too common in high end and mid range dining. Ease off, kids. It’s delicious, but in moderation.
4. Burgers that cost more than $15 (Dare I say, here’s looking at you, Father’s Office — you’re right on the cusp). I don’t care what kind of beef you’re using — it’s a damn burger. Perhaps this is why In and Out, at less than $6 for an entire meal, is on most Foodies’ top 10 lists.
5. Tapas. We love tapas — it’s fun, great for sharing, and you get to try a little of everything. But it also seems to be an excuse for restaurants to serve teeny tiny servings and charge $10+ a plate. Somehow you always end up with a bill over $100 for 2 people. Maybe it’s time to come up with a more creative concept without ripping me off.
6. And finally, the food trucks. This is recent, and thus maybe not a decade gripe, but seriously folks, the food truck thing is just kinda odd. You follow truck on twitter, you track truck down, you wait in line for 45+ mins, pay sit down menu prices, and then wait another 30 mins for your food, to eat said food outside, standing up. I don’t understand this concept and why it’s so “amazing.” Might be ok if you’re drunk on Saturday night at 2am, but not so cool when it’s Thursday afternoon and you have less than a hour for a lunch break.
